Gonda: A cash theft of ₹50,100 has been reported inside a post office in Itiyathok town, with postal agent Sant Pyare Tiwari alleging that an unidentified person stole the money from his bag.
Tiwari, a resident of Ayah village under Itiyathok police station, had reportedly reached the post office at around 10 am on Thursday to deposit the cash in connection with a new account and transactions under the Kisan Vikas Patra and savings account schemes.
According to his complaint, Tiwari submitted the required documents and forms at the counter but could not immediately deposit the money due to heavy workload at the office. He placed the cash inside his bag and waited within the premises for his turn. When he later went to the counter to make an inquiry and returned, he allegedly found the cash missing from a compartment of his bag.
The incident caused a commotion at the post office. A Dial 112 police team reached the spot, questioned people present and conducted an initial inquiry.
Tiwari, a former postal department employee who is now working as an agent for postal savings schemes, subsequently submitted a complaint at Itiyathok police station.
The incident has also raised questions about security arrangements at the post office. Tiwari’s family alleged that the premises lacked CCTV cameras and a security guard. Postmaster Kamlesh Kumari Verma said CCTV could not be installed because the building is rented.
Itiathok Station House Officer Gaurav Singh Tomar said a complaint had been received and police were investigating the matter. Necessary action will be taken based on the findings, he said.
